Description

The ifm SM series are magnetic-inductive (electromagnetic) flow meters for continuous volumetric flow measurement of conductive liquids (water, wastewater, acids, alkalis, slurries — min. conductivity ≥ 5 µS/cm).
  • SM6000 / SM8000 → Advanced electromagnetic flow sensors with IO-Link, high accuracy (±0.5% o.r. ±1 mm/s), and programmable K-factor / flow totalizer.
  • SM7000 → Compact inline magmeter for smaller DN sizes.
  • SM4100 / SM4000 / SM4120 / SM600 → Earlier / economy variants — same Faraday principle, with 4–20 mA + pulse/frequency output (some with display).
These sensors have no moving parts, are immune to viscosity changes, and provide bidirectional flow information. They require a minimum fluid conductivity and are typically flange- or wafer-mounted.

Key Features

  • Measuring Principle: Faraday’s Law — U_ind ∝ v × B × L (flow velocity induces voltage in fluid)
  • Fluid Requirement: Conductivity ≥ 5 µS/cm (tap water OK; demineralized water < 5 µS/cm NOT measurable)
  • Output Options: 4–20 mA analog + pulse/frequency (for totalization) — IO-Link on SM6000/SM8000
  • Nominal Sizes (DN): Typically DN 15 … DN 300+ depending on model (SM6000 covers common mid-range DN)
  • Liner Material: PTFE, PFA, or hard rubber — selected per media compatibility
  • Electrode Material: Stainless steel 316Ti, Hastelloy C-276, Tantalum — per aggressive media
  • Country of Origin: Germany

⚠️ Critical Selection Criteria:
  1. Fluid Conductivity — must be ≥ 5 µS/cm (distilled/deionized water often < 1 µS/cm → NOT measurable!).
  2. Liner & Electrode Material — PTFE/PFA for chemicals; Rubber for abrasive slurry; Hastelloy/Tantalum for corrosive acids.
  3. DN (Nominal Bore) — match pipe ID; full-bore magmeters require straight upstream/downstream runs (5×/2× DN typical) unless flow conditioner used.
  4. Earthing Rings / Grounding Electrodes — mandatory for non-conductive lined pipes (PTFE/PFA).

Warranty & After-Sales

  • Factory new units: 12 months warranty
  • Refurbished units: 3–6 months warranty (where offered)
  • Technical support for:
    • Sizing (DN selection based on expected min/max flow — aim 0.3–6 m/s velocity)
    • Liner & electrode material selection (chemical compatibility chart)
    • Zero-point calibration procedure (empty pipe filled with air → zero; filled with liquid → re-zero if needed)
    • IO-Link parameterization (K-factor, pulse value per liter/gallon, totalizer reset)
    • Earthing / grounding ring requirement explanation
  • Cross-reference vs. Endress+Hauser Promag / Krohne Optiflux / Yokogawa AXF if required
