Description
The CP1L-EM40DR-D is an Omron SYSMAC CP1L-EM series programmable controller — the “mid-compact with built-in Ethernet” tier, sitting below CP1H (high-performance, which we covered last) and above CP1E (entry). The key: “EM” suffix = Ethernet-built-in + Motion capabilities — this is the CP1L variant that has Ethernet port (RJ45, 10/100Base-TX) integrated on the CPU front (not via Option Board like CP1H — CP1H needs CP1W-CIF41 add-on for Ethernet; CP1L-EM has it baked in). The “40” = 40 points = 24× DI (24V DC sink/source) + 16× DO (Relay, 2A/pt); D (after 40) = 24V DC supply (vs “A” = 100–240V AC); R = Relay output (vs “T” = Transistor NPN; “T1” = Transistor PNP); trailing -D = 24V DC supply (double-mark as before).
→ CP1L-EM40DR-D = CP1L-EM series (built-in Ethernet), 40pt (24DI+16DO Relay), 24V DC supply.
⚠️ CP1L vs CP1H quick distinction (since we just did CP1H-X40DT-D last):
CP1L-EM40DR-D (this one) CP1H-X40DT-D (previous) Position Mid-compact + Ethernet built-in High-performance + motion-focused Program 10K steps 20K steps Data Mem 32K words (same) 32K words High-speed pulse 2× 100kHz (PTO/PWM) — 2-axis only 4× 100kHz — 4-axis Ethernet ✅ Built-in RJ45 (EM suffix) ❌ Needs CP1W-CIF41 Option Board USB ✅ USB-B (same) ✅ USB-B RS-232 ✅ Built-in (same) ✅ Built-in Option Board slot ❌ None (Ethernet already in) ✅ 1 slot (CIF11/CIF41/etc) Output (this p/n) Relay 2A (R suffix) NPN Transistor 0.5A (T suffix) Expansions Up to 3× CP1W (same) Up to 3× CP1W Price Lower than CP1H-X Higher Best For Machine w/ Ethernet needed + light motion (2-axis) + relay loads (AC coil contactors, indicators) Heavy 4-axis motion, transistor loads (stepper/servo direct)
CP1L-EM series naming: CP1L comes in three sub-families:
- CP1L-L = bare-bones (no Ethernet, no pulse — just DI/DO + USB/RS-232, 10K steps) — lowest cost
- CP1L-M = motion (2-axis 100kHz pulse) but no Ethernet — needs Option Board for comms
- CP1L-EM = motion (2-axis) + Ethernet built-in RJ45 — the “sweet spot” for machines that need network (Modbus TCP / EtherNet/IP from S7-1500/Logix) + 2-axis motion + relay outputs. Your p/n is EM = this sweet spot.
Why Relay output (R) matters: CP1H-X40DT-D (last item) was NPN transistor 0.5A — can only switch DC loads (solenoids, SSR, stepper drive) and needs interposing relay for AC contactors. This CP1L-EM40DR-D is Relay 2A/pt — can directly switch AC coils (contactors 250V AC), DC loads (30V DC), indicators, small motors without interposing. For OEM machines where you need to kick 220V contactors + 24V pilot lamps + maybe 2-axis stepper — this one PLC covers both. That’s the main buying reason vs CP1H-X transistor.
Legacy migration note: CP1L-EM replaces CPM2A/CPM2AH (first item we did) in many applications WHERE you don’t need 4-axis — CP1L-EM has 10K steps (vs CPM2A 4K), USB built-in (vs CPM2A CIF01), Ethernet built-in (vs CPM2A none), 2-axis pulse (vs CPM2A 2 HSC weak). CP1L-EM is the natural CPM2A replacement for machines that also want Ethernet (CP1H-X is overkill + transistor-only; CP1L-EM gives relay out + Ethernet + 2-axis, closer to CPM2A 40pt footprint).
Programming: CX-Programmer (v9.x+ — CP1L fully supported) or Sysmac Studio (limited, CX-P still primary). USB-B front → standard printer cable. Ethernet RJ45 → PC can program over Ethernet too (CX-P → Ethernet/TCP to PLC, no USB cable needed if networked). Built-in RS-232C for HMI (NB/NQ series NT Link).
Key Features
- Built-in I/O: 24× DI (24V DC sink/source) + 16× DO (Relay, 2A/pt @250V AC / 30V DC, 8A/common — 2 COM groups of 8)
- High-Speed Pulse (M-series motion): 2× pulse outputs, 100 kHz (PTO/PWM) — 2-axis stepper/servo (less than CP1H-X’s 4-axis, but enough for XY table or indexer)
- Ethernet Built-in (EM suffix): RJ45 10/100Base-TX — supports Modbus TCP (server/client), EtherNet/IP Adapter (to Logix/S7-1500), FINS over Ethernet (Omron native — CX-P can reach PLC over network, no USB needed), Socket interface (open TCP/UDP to PC/SCADA/HMI)
- USB-B + RS-232C: Same as CP1H — USB for local prog, RS-232 for HMI/serial device
- Memory: 10K steps program / 32K words data (DM + timers/counters retain) — half CP1H’s 20K but double CPM2A’s 4K
- Execution: Boolean ~0.1 µs/inst (similar to CP1H — CP1L/CP1H share same CPU ASIC essentially)
- Expansion: Up to 3× CP1W modules (AD/DA, DI/DO, TS thermocouple, MAD11 combo) — same as CP1H
- Country of Origin: Japan (Omron)

⚠️ Output Type Check — R vs T: CP1L-EM40DR-D = Relay (this p/n — 2A/pt, can switch AC contactor coils directly, no interposing relay needed). If you need transistor (for stepper/servo drive direct, or SSR) → look at CP1L-EM40DT-D (T=NPN) or CP1L-EM40DT1-D (T1=PNP). Your p/n is R = Relay — confirm your loads! Relay = slower release (10ms mechanical), not for high-speed PWM; transistor = fast, 0.5A DC only.
⚠️ EM vs M vs L suffix:
CP1L-L = no Ethernet, no pulse (10K steps, DI/DO only) — cheapest CP1L-M = 2-axis pulse, no Ethernet (needs Option Board CIF41 for Ethernet) — motion but no net CP1L-EM = 2-axis pulse + Ethernet built-in — your p/n. Sweet spot.If you accidentally order CP1L-M40DR-D (no E) you’ll miss Ethernet — double-check suffix.
Warranty & After-Sales
- Factory new units: 12 months warranty

- Technical support for:
- CP1L-EM vs CP1H-X vs CP1E vs CPM2A choice (EM=2-axis+Ethernet+Relay, mid-price; CP1H-X=4-axis+Transistor+OptionBoard, higher; CP1E=entry no HS pulse; CPM2A=discontinued legacy. For CPM2A 40pt Relay replacement → CP1L-EM40DR-D is closest (relay out + Ethernet + 2-axis, same 90mm width))
- Ethernet first use (RJ45 → PC same subnet → CX-P → “Online” → “FINS Ethernet” driver → auto-discover or IP direct (default 192.168.250.1? Actually CP1L-EM default IP is node-based: last octet = Unit No. × 10 + 1, e.g., Unit No. 0 → 192.168.250.1; check CX-P “PLC Settings” → Ethernet tab) — can program over Ethernet, no USB needed once IP set)
- R vs T output confirmation (R=Relay 2A this p/n → good for AC contactor coils, indicators, small AC loads; if driving stepper/servo drive or SSR → need T=Transistor version CP1L-EM40DT-D)
- 2-axis pulse wiring (Pulse 0/1 + Dir 0/1 on dedicated terminals — similar to CP1H but 2-axis only; wire to stepper drive PUL+/PUL-/DIR+/DIR-)
- Modbus TCP / EtherNet/IP setup (EM built-in: Modbus TCP server/client for SCADA; EtherNet/IP Adapter to Logix/S7-1500 — AOI/ GSDML from Omron site)
- CP1W expansion (same as CP1H: up to 3 — AD041/DA041/MAD11/40EDR/TS)
- Migration CPM2A→CP1L-EM (CPM2A-40CDR-D (40pt Relay, 24V) → CP1L-EM40DR-D is nearest: 10K vs 4K steps, USB vs CIF01, Ethernet built-in vs none, 2-axis vs weak 2 HSC — BUT wiring different: CPM2A MIL → CP1L Euro-terminal; program partial auto-convert CX-P)

Applications
- CPM2A-40CDR-D Replacement (Legacy Migrate): Old CPM2A 40pt Relay (first item we did) in packaging/labeling/conveyor — CP1L-EM40DR-D is the closest modern drop-in philosophy: Relay outputs (so AC contactors/pilot lamps stay wired same), 2-axis pulse (CPM2A only had weak HSC, EM gives real 100kHz 2-axis for simple indexer), Ethernet built-in (CPM2A had none — now can tie to plant SCADA over Modbus TCP). Same 90mm width, but rewire needed (CPM2A MIL→CP1L Euro-terminal). CX-P partial auto-convert.
- OEM Machine + Ethernet + Relay Loads + 2-Axis: Example — cartoner: main conveyor AC motor (contactor coil → relay DO), guard door lamp (relay DO), vibrating feeder (relay DO), + X-Y product pusher (2-axis stepper → pulse 0/1). CP1H-X would be overkill (4-axis, transistor only → need interposing relay for contactors, costs more). CP1L-EM = Relay out covers AC loads + 2-axis covers pusher + Ethernet covers SCADA link — sweet spot.
- Retrofit Non-Omron with Ethernet Need: Mitsubishi FX3U-48MR (48pt Relay, 100kHz 2-axis built-in, no Ethernet native → needs FX3U-ENET-ADP) — CP1L-EM40DR-D matches: Relay, 2-axis, Ethernet baked in, 10K steps vs FX3U 64K (FX bigger but CP1L cheaper + Ethernet in). Wiring different but doable.
- Distributed I/O Over Ethernet: Multiple CP1L-EM on plant Ethernet → S7-1500 / Logix as EtherNet/IP Scanner → each CP1L-EM as Adapter — small local I/O + 2-axis at each machine station, centralized control. FINS also works for Omron-centric plant (CX-P can reach all over net).
