Description
The Omron CJ1W-TC101 is a Temperature Control Unit (TCU) for the SYSMAC CJ-series PLC, providing standalone PID temperature control directly in the PLC rack — no separate temperature controller (E5□C) is needed for simple to moderate heating/cooling loops.
- CJ1W-TC101 → 2 control loops (2 channels), supports Thermocouple (K, J, R, S, T, E, N, B, C, PLII — typical Omron TC list) and RTD (Pt100, JPt100) inputs, Transistor (NPN/open-collector) outputs for driving SSR or solid-state heater drivers, PID with Auto-tuning (AT), Self-tuning (ST), Heater Break Alarm (HBA — detects SSR/heater failure via current transformer or logic), and Loop Alarm (Deviation / PV high/low).
- The module occupies 1 slot in a CJ rack (uses 16 input + 16 output words in the CIO area, plus DM area for setpoints/parameters — allocated automatically by CX-Programmer).
- Configuration is done via CX-Thermo (bundled with CX-Programmer / CX-One) — you set input type, PID constants (or let AT determine them), alarm types, heater break detection, control period (typically 0.5 s – 99 s for SSR drive).
- Compatible with CJ1M, CJ2M, CJ2H CPUs on a CJ1W-PA202/PA205 backplane.
Typical use: Plastic injection molding barrel zones, extruder barrel heat zones, ovens, environmental chambers — anywhere 1–2 temp loops per slot are needed and integrating into the PLC program is preferred over standalone controllers.
Key Features
- Control Loops: 2 independent loops (CH1 / CH2)
- Sensor Inputs: Thermocouple (K/J/R/S/T/E/N/B/C/PLII) & RTD (Pt100, JPt100) — per channel selectable
- Control Outputs: Transistor NPN (open-collector, 24V DC sink) — typically to SSR for heater; can also be used with external SSR driver module (OMRON G3NA etc.)
- Control Algorithm: PID with Auto-tuning (AT), Self-tuning (ST — adapts to process drift), ON/OFF control also possible
- Alarm Functions: PV high/low, Deviation high/low, Heater Break Alarm (HBA — requires external CT or logic feedback — some TC101 versions support HBA via digital input or external CT like K8AK/K8DS paired)
- Communications / Monitoring: Parameters accessible via PLC memory (CIO / DM) — can be monitored/altered from ladder or HMI linked to PLC
- Country of Origin: Japan (Omron Corporation)
Model & Variant Reference (Omron CJ1W-TC Temperature Control Units — Context)
Model | Loops | Input Type | Output Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
CJ1W-TC101 (listed) | 2 | TC / RTD (per ch) | Transistor NPN (SSR drive) | Most common — heats via SSR; AT/ST/PID |
CJ1W-TC102 | 2 | TC / RTD | Voltage (0–10V / 4–20mA — for analog power controller) | Less common — if driving analog SCR/controller |
CJ1W-TC201 | 4 | TC / RTD | Transistor NPN (SSR) | 4-loop version (wider? — actually still 1 slot — 4 ch in same footprint) |
E5CC/E5EC (standalone) | 1 | TC/RTD | Relay / SSR / Analog | Shown for contrast — CJ1W-TC101 replaces simple standalone TCs in integrated designs |
⚠️ Critical Notes:
SSR Drive Output — Not Relay Contact!: CJ1W-TC101 outputs are NPN open-collector transistor (typically 24V DC, 0.1A max sink) intended to drive a Solid State Relay (SSR — e.g., Omron G3NA-210B or G3NA-240B) which in turn switches the heater AC mains. They are NOT power contacts — do NOT connect heaters directly! Use SSR or mechanical contactor with SSR pilot. Wiring — Input Side: TC/RTD wires to dedicated terminals on front of TC101 — follow compensation lead rules (TC = compensating wire; RTD = 3-wire preferred). Shield drain wire to FG terminal on module. CIO/DM Allocation: In CX-Programmer, inserting CJ1W-TC101 auto-assigns a CIO block (e.g., CIO 100–101 for 2 words input status + 2 words output cmd — depends on start address you pick) and DM block for SV/PV/PID params. You read PV from allocated DM word, write SP to another DM word in ladder or via CX-Thermo. CX-Thermo Configuration: After HW insert → double-click TC101 → CX-Thermo launches → set Sensor Type (TC K / Pt100 etc.), Unit (°C/°F), Control Period (SSR drive typ. 0.5 s–2 s), AT mode (Run AT once or always-on ST), Alarm types, HBA (if used). Download to PLC. Heater Break Alarm (HBA): TC101 can detect heater/SSR failure if you provide a CT (current transformer on heater line — e.g., Omron K8DS-CT) feeding a digital input OR some versions allow inference from output state vs expected — check manual for exact HBA method on TC101 (some require external CT + DI wired back to PLC or dedicated HBA module CJ1W-HBA… — TC101 itself monitors output command consistency; true HBA with current sensing may need external CT + logic in CPU or separate HBA unit). Simplified: TC101 alarms if output ON but PV doesn’t rise (soft break detect) — true current-sense HBA often needs external CT.
