Description

The KV-XD02 is a Keyence KV-X / KV-8000 series “Data Utilization Unit” — a dedicated edge AI analytics module that sits on the KV-X/KV-8000 PLC backplane and transforms the PLC from a pure logic controller into a data-driven predictive maintenance platform . It is not a generic IoT gateway — it is a KV-X/KV-8000-expansion-slot-dedicated unit that offloads AI/deep-learning analysis, time-series visualization, and anomaly detection from the main CPU so the ladder scan time stays unaffected .
  • What it actually IS (based on Keyence official positioning ):
    • A data utilization unit that visualizes & analyzes PLC device data with simple settings
    • Performs automatic anomaly-signal analysis via deep learning — learns “normal” patterns of equipment (cycle time, vibration, temperature, current, etc.), then flags deviations in real time without hand-coded rules
    • Enables predictive maintenance — estimates remaining life of motors/bearings, optimizes maintenance intervals
    • Provides operation recording / history replay — saves device values, trends, and variability for post-mortem analysis when faults recur
    • Supports 300+ device presets — communicates with Keyence sensors and third-party devices without custom programming; protocols include Modbus/TCP, EtherNet/IP, TCP/IP, OPC UA
    • Uses KV Studio for one-click AI template creation: add monitored signals → create template → add learning template (3 steps)
  • Hardware core (from Keyence KV-8000 catalog ): Inside is a 1.2 GHz quad-core SoC + dedicated ladder-execution ASIC (KV VELOCE X3). The data-processing CPU handles high-volume data analysis per scan without impacting the equipment-control scan time — this is the key architectural advantage vs. bolting an external PC onto the PLC.
  • ⚠️ IMPORTANT — Compatibility is strict :
    • Connectable CPU units: KV-X Series or KV-8000 Series ONLY
    • Max. connectable units: 1 (you can install only ONE KV-XD02 per system)
    • Does NOT work with KV-5000/3000 as the primary CPU — those can be in the system as expansion units, but the CPU must be KV-X or KV-8000
    • If your PLC is KV-5000, KV-3000, KV-700, or KV Nano → KV-XD02 is incompatible. You’d need to upgrade to KV-X or KV-8000 first.
  • Typical use case : A machine builder wants to add “AI predictive maintenance” to an existing KV-X/KV-8000-controlled line. Instead of adding an external IPC + SCADA + ML platform (costly, complex), they slot a KV-XD02 into the KV-X/KV-8000 rack, connect it via the two onboard RJ-45 GigE ports to the plant network, and use KV Studio to build the AI learning template in minutes. Result: the PLC now visualizes cycle-time variation, flags abnormal motor current/temperature trends, predicts bearing failure, and records all device data around fault events for instant root-cause analysis — all without writing a single line of AI code.

Key Features

  • Edge AI engine: 1.2 GHz quad-core SoC + KV VELOCE X3 dedicated ladder ASIC — deep-learning anomaly detection & predictive maintenance, OFFLOADED from main CPU (zero scan-time penalty)
  • Dual Gigabit Ethernet: 2 × RJ-45 8-pin ports, 100 Mbps / 1000 Mbps auto MDI/MDI-X, Cat5e+ STP recommended for 1000 Mbps
  • Protocol-rich: Native support for Modbus/TCP, EtherNet/IP, TCP/IP, OPC UA — connects to 300+ Keyence & third-party devices without programming
  • Data visualization & recording: Trend charts, variability histograms, operation-history replay, cycle-time/ alarm/ tolerance-band monitors
  • Simple 3-step AI setup in KV Studio: add signals → create template → add learning template
  • Zero running cost: No subscription, no cloud fee — all processing happens at the edge inside the KV-X/KV-8000 rack
  • Seamless PLC integration: Reads/writes KV-X/KV-8000 device memory directly; no ladder code needed for basic data collection (only a one-row “operation permission” relay must be turned on)
  • Compact & rugged: 320 g, 24 VDC powered (or 100–240 VAC via KV-PU1), 0…+55°C (with KV-8000/7000 only) / 0…+50°C (with KV-5000/3000 expansion)

⚠️ Critical selection notes:
  1. KV-X or KV-8000 CPU is MANDATORY — KV-XD02 will NOT mount on or communicate with KV-5000/3000/KV-700/KV Nano as the primary CPU. If your system is KV-5000/3000, those must be expansion units under a KV-X/KV-8000 CPU.
  2. Only ONE KV-XD02 per system — You cannot install two for redundancy or load-sharing. Its internal quad-core SoC is sized to handle the full AI workload of a single KV-X/KV-8000 system.
  3. Power wiring: If your cabinet already has 24VDC control power → use the power terminal block (24VDC). If you prefer AC power → use the KV-PU1 power supply unit (100–240VAC) to feed the KV-XD02. KV-PU1 is typically ordered separately unless your system bundle includes it.
  4. Ethernet cabling: For 1000 Mbps (GigE) operation, use double-shielded STP, Cat5e or higher — UTP is not recommended at 1000 Mbps due to EMI in industrial cabinets. 100 m max from KV-XD02 to the Ethernet switch.
  5. Accessories NOT included — The product photo may show brackets, cables, or connectors for illustration; they are NOT included in the box . You must order separately: KV-PU1 (if AC power desired), Ethernet cables (Cat5e+ STP), and any mounting hardware per KV-X/KV-8000 rack system.
  6. Temperature rating depends on system composition — With a pure KV-8000/7000 system → 0…+55°C (better). If KV-5000/3000 expansion units are present → 0…+50°C (more conservative). Check your cabinet’s lower-unit ambient temperature.

Warranty & After-Sales

  • Factory new units: 12 months warranty
  • Refurbished units: 3-6 months warranty (bench: mount in KV-X or KV-8000 rack → 24VDC or KV-PU1 AC power → link to KV Studio → auto-detect → Ethernet ports link at 1000 Mbps → run AI learning template demo on sample device data → verify operation record & anomaly detection → confirm scan time unaffected)
  • Technical support for:
    • KV-XD02 vs system compatibility (KV-X or KV-8000 CPU required; KV-5000/3000 must be expansion only; we can verify your existing PLC config — send us your CPU model)
    • KV-PU1 AC power option (if you don’t have 24VDC in the cabinet, add KV-PU1 for 100–240VAC input — we can bundle)
    • KV Studio AI template creation (3-step walkthrough: add monitored signals → create template → add learning template; we provide remote screen-share guidance)
    • Protocol enablement (EtherNet/IP to Rockwell/OMRON, Modbus/TCP to SCADA, OPC UA to MES/ERP — KV-XD02 speaks all natively; 300+ device EDS presets eliminate manual tag mapping)
    • Predictive maintenance scenario setup (motor current/temperature/vibration trend monitoring → AI learns normal → flags deviation → predicts RUL; we help define which KV device variables to feed)
    • Operation record configuration (define trigger conditions — alarm bit, cycle end, threshold breach — KV-XD02 auto-records all device data ± window around event for instant replay)
    • Network topology (2× GigE ports: typical use = Port A to KV-X/KV-8000 CPU backplane (internal), Port B to plant network; or both to Ethernet switch for redundancy — 100 m max per port)
    • KV-5000/3000 migration path (if your current PLC is KV-5000/3000 and you want KV-XD02 → you need to upgrade the CPU to KV-X or KV-8000; KV-5000/3000 I/O units can be kept as expansion. We can scope the migration: new CPU + KV-XD02 + KV Studio re-license, reusing existing I/O)
  • Optional: KV-PU1 power supply (100–240VAC → 24VDC for KV-XD02), Cat5e/Cat6 double-shielded STP Ethernet cables (0.5/1/3/5/10m), KV-X/KV-8000 CPU unit (if you need to upgrade from KV-5000/3000), KV Studio software license (site license, free install/update within company), KV-X rack mounting hardware

Applications

  • Predictive Maintenance on Existing KV-X/KV-8000 Line: Slot KV-XD02 into the rack of a KV-X-controlled packaging machine. Feed motor current, inverter frequency, cylinder pressure, and cycle time as monitored signals. KV-XD02 deep-learn the “normal” pattern over a few shifts, then automatically flags deviation → alerts maintenance before bearing fails or product quality drifts. Eliminates unplanned downtime (real case: overseas customer had random no-fault stops causing scrap; KV-XD02 pinpointed the anomalous signal source by comparing pre/post-stop data) .
  • Anomaly Detection in Injection Molding: Monitor mold temperature, injection pressure, screw position, hydraulic pressure via KV device memory. KV-XD02 AI predicts micro-cracks in mold before they cause batch scrap — a scenario explicitly cited by Keyence .
  • Cycle-Time Variation Analysis: Visualize and statistically analyze cycle-time distribution across thousands of cycles. Identify slow-down trends before they become failures. Operation record replays the exact device state (all variables) in the 10 seconds before a fault, so root cause is found in minutes, not days.
  • MES/ERP Integration via OPC UA: KV-XD02 acts as the OPC UA server, exposing KV device data + AI inference results to the plant MES/ERP — no separate OPC UA gateway needed. SCADA pulls data via Modbus/TCP simultaneously. EtherNet/IP connects to Rockwell/OMRON upstream PLCs. All protocols handled by the single KV-XD02.
  • 300+ Sensor Direct Connect: Keyence’s 300+ device EDS presets mean KV-XD02 can talk to Keyence sensors (photoelectric, laser, vision, flow, pressure, temperature) with ZERO programming — tag info auto-registers in KV Studio. Third-party Modbus/TCP devices also connect natively.
  • KV-5000/3000 System Upgrade: If your 10-year-old machine runs KV-5000/3000 and you want AI capability → replace the CPU with KV-X (keeping KV-5000/3000 I/O as expansion units), add KV-XD02, re-license KV Studio (free site license). The whole system becomes AI-enabled with minimal rewiring.
  • Multi-CPU Data Concentration: In a KV-8000 multi-CPU system, KV-XD02 aggregates data from all CPUs, performs cross-CPU analysis (e.g., correlation between upstream feeder speed and downstream quality), and centrally manages predictive maintenance across the line.
