Description
The ifm SBG Series are electronic flow monitors / flow meters with integrated digital display, designed for monitoring cooling water, lubricants, hydraulic oil, and air/gas flows in machine tools and industrial systems. The SBG246 features a high-contrast LCD display showing actual flow rate, temperature (on dual-sensor models), and switch status, with fast response time (< 500 ms) suitable for real-time monitoring. Related models:
- SBG232 / SBG233 / SBG234 → Paddle-wheel or vortex type flow monitors for liquids (coolant/oil) with adjustable setpoint, NPN/PNP or relay output.
- SBG332 → Similar form factor, often for higher viscosity oils or with different output config (analog + switch).
- SBG257 → Flow monitor variant with extended temperature range or special media compatibility.
- SBG246 → Enhanced version with large dual-line display (flow + temperature on some variants), IO-Link ready (select versions), fast response, and 2 × switching outputs or 1 × analog + 1 × switch.
These units detect flow via a paddle-wheel sensor (for low-viscosity liquids) or thermal principle (for air/gas models — check suffix), and provide both visual indication and electrical switch/analog signals for PLC control or alarm annunciation.
Key Features
- Display: High-contrast LCD — shows flow rate (L/min or m³/h) and temperature (on SBG246 with T-sensor).
- Outputs: 2 × PNP/NPN switching outputs (or 1 × 4–20 mA + 1 × PNP — model dependent) + IO-Link on smart variants.
- Response Time: ≤ 500 ms (fast enough for real-time machine protection).
- Setpoint Adjustment: Via 3 front keys — no PC required (though IO-Link versions can be configured via moneo).
- Medium Types: Coolant, cutting oil, hydraulic oil (viscosity range specified per model — paddle-wheel typically ≤ 50 cSt; thermal for air/gas).
- Country of Origin: Germany
Model Reference Table
Model | Sensing Principle | Medium | Display | Outputs | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
SBG246 | Paddle-wheel / Thermal* | Water, oil, air (check suffix) | Dual-line LCD (Flow + Temp*) | 2× PNP (or 1× Ana + 1× Sw) + IO-Link (sel.) | Coolant flow + temp with local readout |
SBG232 | Paddle-wheel | Water / coolant / oil (≤ 30 cSt) | LED bar + digital | 2× PNP/NPN switch | Simple flow NO/NC monitoring |
SBG233 / SBG234 | Paddle-wheel | Water / oil (vary flow ranges) | LED + digital | 2× switch outputs | Flow alarm on machines |
SBG332 | Paddle-wheel / Thermal | Oil (higher visc.) / Air (thermal) | Digital LED | 1× 4–20 mA + 1× PNP | Analog flow to PLC + alarm |
SBG257 | Thermal (air/gas) or Paddle | Compressed air / gas (thermal) or special liquid | Digital | Switch + Analog (var.) | Air consumption / leak detection |
⚠️ Important:
Viscosity Limit: Paddle-wheel types (SBG2xx/SBG3xx liquid models) are for low-viscosity liquids (typically < 50 cSt @ 40°C) — e.g., water, soluble oil coolant. High-viscosity gear/hydraulic oil (> 100 cSt) → consider thermal or positive-displacement flow meters. Flow Direction & Installation: Paddle-wheel requires horizontal pipe run with full bore and arrow on body aligned with flow. Minimum straight runs: 5×DN upstream, 2×DN downstream. Display Units: SBG246 can show L/min, m³/h, or GPM — selectable via menu. Temperature display only if internal Pt1000 is present (check suffix — SBG246 with “T” in complete part number). Output Type: Confirm PNP (source, common in EU/Asia) vs NPN (sink) before ordering — most ifm stock is PNP as default.
