Description
The DSM-16-270-P-A-B (Festo part No. 547574) is a pneumatic semi-rotary drive — a vane-type rotary actuator — from Festo’s classic DSM series. It converts compressed air directly into a rotational/swing motion up to 270°, making it the compact, high-torque solution for turning, flipping, indexing, and positioning tasks in factory automation where an electric servo would be overkill.
- Model breakdown (Festo DSM naming) :
- DSM = Semi-rotary drive (vane-type rotary actuator series)
- 16 = Size 16 (vane diameter/body size — middle of the DSM range: 12/16/25/32/40/63)
- 270 = Swivel angle 0°…270° (max. rotation range — DSM offers 90/180/270° variants; this is the max-travel 270° version)
- P = Elastic cushioning rings/pads at both ends (the “P” damping type — absorbs end-impact; other options: A=no cushioning, P1=adjustable elastic, CC=auto-adjust shock absorber)
- A = Position detection via proximity switch (magnetic ring embedded for Hall-effect / reed proximity sensor — sensor sold separately, mounts in grooves)
- B = B-series variant (standard shaft = spigot shaft / 圆柱轴 with keyway option; B denotes the B-version mechanical package)
- → DSM-16-270-P-A-B = Size 16 vane rotary actuator, 270° swivel, double-acting, elastic end cushioning, proximity-switch ready, B-series variant.
💡 What “semi-rotary” means: Unlike a continuous-rotation pneumatic motor, this is a limited-angle actuator — it swings between two end stops (0° and 270°), with the exact stroke adjustable via built-in mechanical stops (fine adjustment -6°). Think of it as a “pneumatic wrist” that flips/turns a workpiece.
Key differentiators vs other DSM sizes :
Size | Part No. (P-type, 270°) | Torque @6bar | Weight | Max Radial Force | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
12 | DSM-12-270-P-A-B (547570) | 1.25 Nm | 275 g | 45 N | Very light flip |
16 (this one) | DSM-16-270-P-A-B (547574) | 2.5 Nm | 470 g | 75 N | Light-medium flip/index |
25 | DSM-25-270-P-A-B (547578) | 5 Nm | 700 g | 120 N | Medium load |
32 | DSM-32-270-P-A-B (547582) | 10 Nm | 1100 g | 200 N | Heavy index |
40 | DSM-40-270-P-A-B (547586) | 20 Nm | 1900 g | 350 N | Heavy-duty flip |
63 | DSM-63-270-P-A-B (552079) | 40 Nm | 3870 g | — | Very heavy |
The size 16 is the sweet spot for small-parts handling: 2.5 Nm torque at 6 bar, only 470 g, M5 air ports, and a compact footprint.
P vs P1 vs CC cushioning :
- P (this unit) = Fixed elastic cushioning rings at both ends — simple, maintenance-free, absorbs normal inertia loads.
- P1 = Adjustable elastic cushioning — for varying loads/inertia, you can tune the cushion stroke.
- CC = Auto-adjusting hydraulic shock absorber — for very high inertia / high kinetic energy, self-adjusts.
For most light automation (flips, small index tables, door open/close), P-type is sufficient and most economical.
Why “A” (proximity switch ready)?
The “A” means the actuator body has grooves for proximity sensors and an embedded magnetic ring on the vane — you simply clip a Festo SME-8M/8C/8S proximity switch into the groove and get end-position feedback to your PLC. Without “A” (i.e., DSM-16-270-P-B), the body lacks the magnetic ring and sensor grooves.
Key Features :

- Medium: Filtered compressed air per ISO 8573-1:2010 [7:-:-] (lubricated operation possible, then always required)
- CRC 0 (no corrosion resistance — for dry indoor industrial use; for washdown/chemical, look at HD variant or stainless)
- Cleanroom class 6 per ISO 14644-1 — suitable for cleanroom applications
- Materials: Housing = wrought aluminium alloy; shaft = steel, nickel-plated; seals = TPE-U (PU) — RoHS compliant
- Weight: 470 g

⚠️ Key selection notes:
Proximity sensor NOT included — The “A” means the body is ready for proximity switches (has grooves + embedded magnet). You must order separately: SME-8M-DS-24V-K-… (24V DC NPN/PNP) clips into the groove. Without it, you have no end-position feedback. Shaft type — “B” variant = spigot shaft (圆柱轴) with keyway option. If you need a flange shaft (large face mount), look at FW variant: DSM-16-270-P-FW-A-B (547575). FW has a front face flange for direct mounting of turntables/jigs. Cushioning P-type is FIXED — If your application has high inertia (large turntable, heavy gripper), the fixed P cushioning may not absorb the kinetic energy → upgrade to P1 (adjustable, part no. 566206) or CC (shock absorber, part no. 547577). Don’t exceed inertia 0.01 kg·m² — Over-inertia can damage the cushioning rings. Calculate: load inertia = m·r² (point mass) or ∑(½·m·r²) for disks. If exceeding, use size 25 (0.015 kg·m²) or 32 (higher). No corrosion resistance (CRC0) — For washdown, outdoor, or chemical exposure, this standard DSM is NOT suitable. Consider DSM-HD (heavy-duty bearing version) or stainless/coated alternatives. M5 air ports — Use M5 push-in fittings (e.g., Festo QS-M5-… series) with 4×6mm or 6×8mm tubing. Flow is modest (470g actuator), so 4×6mm polyurethane tube is fine.
Warranty & After-Sales
- Factory new units: 12 months warranty
- Refurbished units: 3-6 months warranty (bench: apply 6bar compressed air to both ports alternately → smooth 0°↔270° swing, no stall, cushioning engages softly at both ends, proximity sensor groove verified, shaft play <0.1mm)
- Technical support for:
- Proximity switch selection (SME-8M-DS-24V-K-… 24V DC PNP/NPN; clips into DSM groove; 2 sensors needed for both end positions, or 1 for home position — we can supply)
- Cushioning choice (P=fixed elastic (547574, this one) vs P1=adjustable (566206) vs CC=shock absorber (547577) — depends on load inertia. Rule: if load inertia ≤0.01kg·m² → P is fine; if higher → P1/CC)
- Shaft type choice (B=spigot shaft (547574) vs FW=flange shaft (547575) — B for coupling to your own shaft/gear; FW for direct mounting of turntable/jig on front face)
- DSM-16 vs DSM-25 sizing (if 2.5 Nm insufficient → step to DSM-25-270-P-A-B (547578) giving 5 Nm; if 2.5 Nm overkill → step down to DSM-12 (547570) for weight/cost saving)
- Mounting & tubing (female thread mount — use Festo DSM accessory kit for flange clamp; M5 ports → QS-M5 push-in fitting + 4×6mm PU tubing; air prep: FRC filter-regulator-lubricator if lubricated operation chosen)
- End-stop adjustment (-6° fine adjustment screw — sets exact swivel range between 0–270°; for partial stroke (e.g., 0–90° flap), adjust both end stops accordingly)
- DSM vs DRVS comparison (DRVS is Festo’s newer compact rotary actuator with similar function but different body style — DRVS-16-270-P is the DRVS equivalent; DSM is more established, wider accessory ecosystem, better for legacy systems)
- DSM-HD for higher forces (if axial/radial forces exceed 30N/75N → DSM-16-270-P1-HD-A-B (1369117) has heavy-duty bearings: 290N axial, 300N radial — same torque but 700g weight)
- Optional: Proximity switches (SME-8M-DS-24V-K-…), M5 push-in fittings (QS-M5-4-… or QS-M5-6-…), mounting clamps (DSM accessory kit), coupling for spigot shaft, flow restrictor (GRLA-M5 for speed control), silencers (UC-M5), FRL unit (FRC-1/8 for M5 system)

Applications
- Small-Parts Flip / Turn in Assembly: DSM-16-270-P-A-B mounted on a bench — gripper picks a small part, actuator flips it 180° (within 270° range) for inspection or insertion. 2.5 Nm torque handles parts up to ~0.5 kg at 100mm radius. 2 Hz frequency = 120 flips/min — keeps pace with high-speed assembly lines.
- Index Table Drive (light): Direct-mount a small 6-station index dial (≤0.01 kg·m² inertia) on the spigot shaft — actuator rotates 60° increments (within 270° total range) for sequential processing. Proximity switch (SME-8M) at home position for zero-reference.
- Flap / Door / Gate Opening: 270° swing is perfect for flap doors on chutes, inspection hatches, or diverter gates in material handling. Double-acting control gives precise open/close with elastic cushioning (no slam). P-type cushioning sufficient for flaps ≤1 kg.
- Pick-and-Place Wrist: As the “wrist” of a pneumatic pick-and-place — base XYZ handled by linear slides, DSM-16 does the orientation twist (e.g., 90° turn of a bottle for labeling). Compact 470g doesn’t burden the linear axes.
- Conveyor Diverter / Pusher Arm: Swings a diverter arm 270° to route parts to different lanes. Double-acting ensures positive routing in both directions; cushioned ends prevent arm bounce.
- Legacy DSM Maintenance / Spare: Replacing an old DSM-16-270-P-A-B in a 10-year-old machine — this 547574 is the current production part, 100% form-fit-function compatible with earlier DSM-16 units (same M5 ports, same mounting, same shaft). Drop-in spare for minimal downtime.
- Cleanroom / Lab Automation: Cleanroom class 6 (ISO 14644-1) makes this suitable for pharma/electronics lab automation — flippers in sterile environments, sample carousel indexing, etc. Non-lubricated operation possible (dry air per ISO 8573-1 [7:-:-]).
